Join us as we bring together Virginia Wines and Oysters in the distinctively beautiful Shenandoah Valley amidst two artisanal days featuring local arts, farms, music and culinary respite adventures. 

ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 5 – hit the road for an all day OPEN DOOR TOUR.  All across the county trail sites are featuring a diverse collection of special events, artist classes, farm-to-table workshops, exclusive open studio experiences, special package rates for lodging, culinary highlights, wonderful wines and more!  See our terrific line up of participating artisan trail sites below and check back often as this list is updated daily.

OASIS Fine Art & Craft, Artists’ Live Demonstrations: Artisan Trail Site #35 (103 S. Main Street Harrisonburg, VA 22801)

FREE. 10am – 5pm. Artists from around the region will be present during open hours doing live demonstrations in various media.

The Edith J Carrier Arboretum – A Free Public Garden open for “Artisan Trail Open Door Tour”: Artisan Trail Site #76 (780 University Blvd, Harrisonburg, VA 22807)

FREE.  Open 8am – 3pm.Open Door Tour visitors can cool down during this wonderful walk winding through woodland trails landscaped with Virginia native plants and enhanced with botanical gardens and wide expanses of lawns. The arboretum offers a wide range of seasonally appropriate educational and cultural events on site throughout the year. Come appreciate the beauty of nature, protected and captured amidst the hustle and activity of the thriving city of Harrisonburg and the pulse of campus life at James Madison University. Learn about environmental preservation and study one of our most valuable resources: plants and trees. Be a doer and volunteer or be a dreamer and spread a blanket on our lawns and relax or be any kind of visitor in between. The arboretum is here for you!

Cootes Store Farms, Kickoff of Apple Season and from Tree into Table: Artisan Trail Site #43 (13285 Turleytown Road, Broadway VA)

FREE.  9am – 4pm.  We will kickoff the start of Apple harvest season with Ginger Gold Apples fresh off the tree. A wonderful apple discovered as a chance seedling in Virginia in the 1960’s. A mildly flavorful apple and sweet for an early variety. Perfect for any use you would desire from eating out of hand, sauce to frying. We will also have orchard tours available, Sawmill demonstrations, open wood shop and of course lots of apples available, furniture & will be available to answer any questions you have & show you around the farm.

FREE.  10am – 5pm.  Each visitor will receive a free ceramic ornament and explore the space where the pottery and one of a kind baskets are created.   The pottery is made from food grade clay and glazes and can be used in the microwave and dishwasher.

FREE.  10am – 3pm. Demonstration of custom glass ornaments featuring Glaskolben kits.

SoLace Studios Fine Handcrafts, Stock the Rock with School Supplies: Artisan Trail Site #38 (193 W. Spotswood Ave., Elkton, VA 22827)

FREE. 10am – 5pm.  Help Stock the Rock with school supplies and receive 15% off coupon for a purchase at SoLace Studios Fine Handcrafts through December 31, 2017. Live music by the E-town Band. Have your picture taken with school mascots. We are celebrating! All donations will benefit students in East Rockingham county schools.

Spitzer Art Center Open Studios and Demos:  Artisan Trail Site #39 (486 W. Market Street, Harrisonburg VA. 22801)

FREE.  10am – 2pm.  Spitzer Art Center is located in a historic Victorian house a few blocks from Downtown Harrisonburg. It houses 12 working artists in 8 studios. Artist demos and tours of artists studios will be from 10am to 2 pm. Stop by, sit on our shady front porch rockers, and enjoy free refreshments.

The Heritage Museum, Art & Book Sale: Artisan Trail Site #89 (382 High ST Dayton, VA 22821)

10am-5pm.  The Book & Gift Shop at The Heritage Museum is filled with unique books, photography, and craft items which reflect the rich stories exhibited in the galleries through folk art, fraktur, pottery, textiles, and other items. Shopping is free, but you’ll be eager to contribute your admission fee to see the extensive exhibits! The Heritage Museum is also the Historic Dayton Welcome Center. Don’t forget to pick up a walking tour guide for information on the charming homes and buildings in the historic district, as well as murals and sculpture.

Jewel Hertzler, Open Working Studio: Artisan Trail Site #19  (486 W. Market Street, Harrisonburg, VA)

FREE.  10am – 2pm.  Jewel’s encaustic painting studio, is one of 8 artist studios, located in a Historic Victorian house, The Spitzer Art Center, located a few blocks from downtown Harrisonburg. Stop by to experience Jewel in action as she provides demos. There will also be art work on display and for sale. Relax in the cool shade on one of our rocking chairs on the front porch while sampling refreshments.

Virginia Quilt Museum, Exhibit Phase II: Artisan Trail Site #87 (301 S. Main St., Harrisonburg, VA)

$7 general, $5 student, FREE under age 5.  10am – 4pm.  The Museum opens its second phase of 2017 exhibits on Tuesday, May 30, featuring two collections of World War I era quilts in commemoration of the Centennial of our country’s involvement. Discover how those on the home front “did their bit” for the war effort. In addition, two collections will celebrate the old and new of fiber art and needlework. This phase of exhibits runs through August 26, with the Museum open Tuesdays through Saturdays, except July 4th, from 10 am to 4 pm.

FREE.  10:30am – 6pm.  Come see Barbara in action, doing some glass work!  A rare opportunity, her beautiful glass studio will be open and waiting for your visit!

White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple WOLF Vineyard National Oyster Day & Lavender Demo: Artisan Trail Site #51 (2644 Cross Keys RD, Harrisonburg, VA 22801)

11:00 am- 4:00pm  White Oak Lavender Farm & The Purple WOLF Vineyard is having a culinary day! At 11:00AM participants can take a walking tour of the lavender farm and participate in harvesting lavender, watching a distilling demonstration and learning about the many types of lavender used for culinary and oils. ($8) At 12:30PM there will be a culinary lavender demonstration (with samples) by Nancy Baggett. Nancy is author of many cookbooks, but will be signing her latest cookbook, “The Art of Cooking with Lavender.” Find out more about Nancy at www.kitchenlane.com At 4:00PM we will be celebrating National Oyster Day with a demonstration pairing lavender and oysters (samples will be provided!) White Oak Lavender Farm owner, Julie Haushalter will be on hand to teach and answer questions about culinary lavender available at the farm during each presentation. Attendees to our culinary presentations may participate in wine tasting for a small fee and will receive a free lavender compound butter recipe and delicious samples from our guest chefs! Culinary lavender plants and flower buds will be available for purchase. The demonstrations are free of charge!
