Alex Carr Art Studio – Trail Site #2 (19989 Colchester Road, Purcellville, VA 20132)

L-O-V-E Letters ~ Watercolor Fun with Illustration and Lettering….full day workshop. Versatile watercolor is the perfect medium for illustrative lettering. In this pre-Valentine’s Day workshop you will paint an image for each L-O-V-E letter, creating a beautiful message for the season and every day. You’ll practice a different watercolor technique with each letter: layering color and form for depth; masking to preserve pinpoint light; using salt to create organic texture; and glazing for overall color continuity. Use iridescent pigments as accents, to create sparkling effects!

Alex’s playful, question-friendly approach has lots of demonstrations so all levels can follow along and enjoy exploring and experimenting. Practicing skills and technique are always part of the process, but Alex also maintains a gentle focus on relaxing, having fun and tapping into the calming influence of creativity so everyone can:

  • learn about watercolor’s soft fluidity, transparent colors, organic patterns and textural qualities
  • learn ways to simplify forms so they are easier to sketch and paint
  • learn to sidestep perfectionist tendencies and venture beyond literal interpretation
  • learn to enjoy the process of painting and practice creativity as a way of disengaging from stress, anxiety, and mind-clutter
  • learn to quiet the inner critic and detach from preconceived ideas and arbitrary perceptions of good or right in creating art
  • learn to find the emotional component in art, build confidence through experimentation, and explore your creative voice
  • Most importantly, have fun!

All art supplies are provided at the studio, so there are no supplies to purchase and no additional expenses Included with the five-hour workshop are: watercolor paper, paints, use of palettes, brushes, drafting supplies, reference materials, etc., as well as a healthy light lunch, snacks and refreshments for the day. Sunday, February 11th, from 11 am to 4 pm. $100/person, inclusive.
