Historic Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern – Trail Site #39 (73 Monument Place, Heathsville, VA 22473)
Spinning – From Sticks & Stones to 3-D Printed The Tavern Spinners & Weavers Guild will be demonstrating the world of ways to spin fibers into yarn. Demonstrations include using a spindle made from a stick and a stone, as well as one created on a 3-D printer, plus spindles from around the world, the big wheel, several types of small wheels, and tabletop wheels.
Activities will take place inside the Tavern’s “Heritage Arts Center” Gift Shoppe, which sells wares made by over 75 local artisans, including handspun yarn and knitted and woven items made from handspun yarn. Free. 10:00am – 2:00pm
Artisan Open House The premier stop on the Northern Neck Artisan Trail, Rice’s Hotel / Hughlett’s Tavern will hold an Open House as part of the trail’s new “Second Saturday Open Door Tour.” The Tavern’s Artisan Guilds will be demonstrating their skills. The Tavern “Heritage Arts Center” Gift Shoppe will be open, as will the Tavern Café.
The Tavern’s Spinners & Weavers Guild will be hosting a special program on spinning, entitled “From Sticks & Stones to 3-D printed,” which will explore the many devices from around the world that can be used for spinning fiber into yarn. The Tavern Blacksmith Guild will be teaching “Blacksmithing 101” in their operational forge. Visitors are invited to watch. The Tavern Woodworking Guild will be demonstrating spoon carving and decorative woodburning.
A historical landmark dating back to the late 1700’s, Rice’s Hotel / Hughlett’s Tavern is an entirely volunteer-run, non-profit operation. The Tavern is open weekly Thursday thru Saturday, 10 am – 2 pm.
Stratford Hall – Trail Site #120 (483 Great House Road, Stratford, VA 22558)
Landscape Series: Family Trek – The Spring Forest Spend a morning exploring the forests of Stratford Hall as spring awakens flora and fauna from their winter sleep. Stratford Hall’s 2018 Landscape Series will kick off with a family adventure: Family Trek – The Spring Forest, featuring a 45 minute presentation in the duPont Library by local master naturalist Harry Puffenbarger who will then lead a hike through the Stratford landscape. The 2018 Landscape series has been designed to deepen the public’s appreciation of the woodlands and fields at Stratford Hall through this informal yet informative family event.

Tours & Tastings Enjoy a tasting of 8 wines for $8 (includes a souvenir glass). Take a tour of our production facility and learn about our history and our winemaking process. Shop our extensive gift shop, which is stocked with gift items, wine accessories and housewares. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in our courtyard! We’ll also be offering a special sale on select wines. 10:00am – 5:00pm
Bee’s Stained Glass – Trail Site #5 (233 Longfield Rd, Colonial Beach, VA 22443)
Stained Glass Mini Class Ever wondered what Stained Glass is? How a Stained Glass Panel is Made? What tools are needed to create a Stained Glass Masterpiece? Is it something that you might enjoy learning? Well, now’s a good time to see what it’s all about and how it’s done… come and try your hand a making a small heart sun catcher in this mini-class. We will supply everything needed to make your heart… the only thing we ask is that you wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Ages: 10 (with an adult) and up. Please Call ahead. Zekiah Glass – Trail Site #36 (511 Oakley LN, Farnham, VA 22460)
Open Door Studio Tour Spring Suncatcher Create your own spring suncatcher and learn the basics of cutting and grinding glass. Free. 1:00pm – 4:00pm
