Stratford Hall  — Trail Site #120 (483 Great House Road, Stratford, VA 22558)

Geo Series: Stratford under our Feet with Dr. Robert Weems

Search for fossils and shark’s teeth while exploring the cliffs of Stratford Hall.

Most of the visitors who stroll the Stratford beach looking for the occasional shark’s tooth or bone fragment do not realize that they have just found a small clue about a very distant time. The cliffs at Stratford Hall record millions of years of earth’s history, and more importantly, divulge evidence of vast earth climate changes as well as continental movements. Dr. Robert Weems, retired United States Geological Survey paleontologist and internationally renowned expert on the Miocene epoch will be presenting a rare opportunity to learn more about these Earth transformations as they are recorded in the cliffs at Stratford Hall. After a short discussion and slide presentation in the duPont Library, registrants will proceed to the beach to begin their trek into time. Visitors will be allowed special access to restricted beach areas. The Stratford Hall Paleo Patrol will assist in the identification of specimens.

Pre-registration is required by Friday, June 8 at 5:00 p.m. Contact Jon Bachman atjbachman@stratfordhall.org or call 804-493-1972 for more information and/or registration.

Historic Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern — Trail Site #39 (73 Monument Place, Heathsville, VA 22473)

World-wide Knit in Public Day

Knit on the Tavern’s porch at the largest knitter-run event in the world.

With a mission of “Better living through stitching together,” World Wide Knit in Public Day is now annually celebrated in over 50 countries.

Please bring your project to work on or use our supplies to work on some squares for afghans that will be given to charity. You may also choose to knit sweaters for trees, sign posts, and other fixed objects near the Tavern. This is your chance to meet knitters, learn to knit, knit a row, and chat about knitting. Men, women and children are all invited.

Rice’s Hotel / Hughlett’s Tavern will be festooned in knitted “wisteria,” and the “Heritage Arts Center” Gift Shoppe and Tavern Café will be open. The Gift Shoppe sells locally-made handcrafted artisan wares, included hand-spun yarn, knitted shawls, hand-woven baby blankets, and much more. Over 75 artisans have items for sale.

The Tavern Café offers an ever-changing menu of light luncheon fare and sweet treats, all homemade by the volunteers of the Tavern’s Culinary Guild.

The Tavern is home to four artisan guilds. Meet the Blacksmiths in the Forge, the Woodworkers in the Carriage House, the Quilters in their studio on the first floor of the Tavern, and the Spinners & Weavers in their studio on the second floor.
